Mike Mattera is Global Director of Corporate Sustainability and ESG Officer at Akamai Technologies. He leads the company's sustainability program and ESG corporate disclosure initiatives. Mike is responsible for the company's sustainability strategic vision for Akamai Connected Cloud, located in over 4100 locations with over 1400 networks globally. He has worked in the technology field in various capacities for over 20 years, focusing on network infrastructure, construction, renewables, and sustainability.

What major trend do you anticipate shaping your industry in 2024?

The significant sustainability trend that will shape Akamai's industry in 2024, more broadly Akamai Connect Cloud, will be a continued focus on reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency. As more businesses move to the cloud and rely on companies like Akamai to provide them with their broad cloud needs, the demand for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly data centers and infrastructure will grow. We will see continued investing in renewable energy sources like wind and solar power that could pose significant challenges to the existing grid and infrastructure. We will see the use of advanced cooling systems, UPS, and utility-scale storage to optimize energy usage in data center deployments. In addition, you will see the increased exploration of innovative new technologies like permanent carbon removal (CDR), liquid cooling, and artificial intelligence-driven energy management systems to improve efficiency further.

How will the sustainability and decarbonization landscape evolve over the next couple of years?

As we continue to expand the various technologies, we use to prioritize sustainability and decarbonization efforts, the technology sector will continue to play a significant role in driving progress. Over the next few years, we expect to see more emphasis on renewable energy, the expansion of green manufacturing practices in the US, and the greater need for sustainable supply chain management, especially in areas where businesses face increased regulations. Like Akamai, many tech companies are already taking steps to reduce their carbon footprint, from investing in renewable energy sources to implementing circular economy principles. Over 2024, now exiting COP 28, more consumers and stakeholders will demand more sustainable products and services, and we expect to see a continued push for innovation in this area. From my point of view, the sustainability and decarbonization landscape in the technology sector is likely to evolve rapidly, with an increasing focus on collaboration and transparency in driving progress toward a more sustainable future.

How do you personally plan to positively impact the environment?

As someone in sustainability, I have been contemplating various ways to contribute towards preserving our planet for future generations. Every individual can positively impact the environment, irrespective of their field of work. In the coming years, my objective is to leverage the platform I have helped build, engage with others, and take proactive steps toward educating people about the significance of sustainability. By doing so, I plan to play my part in reducing our carbon footprint and promoting a greener world.

Anything else you’d like to add.

Over 2023, we saw the effects of climate change and environmental degradation are becoming increasingly apparent. From natural disasters to rising sea levels, our actions impact our planet and communities significantly by working toward impactful ways to reduce our emissions footprint, address environmental issues, and promote a healthier and more equitable world for future generations. We must take proactive steps now to ensure a sustainable future for all.
