As we reflect on 2024, one thing becomes crystal clear: the urgency of corporate climate action has never been greater. The climate crisis is no longer a distant threat—it's here, reshaping our world and exacting growing costs. Yet alongside this urgency, I feel hope—hope born from witnessing what's possible when people come together to tackle challenges and embrace new opportunities.
At the Net Zero Institute, we've spent 2024 building a foundation of support to enable our members to have a transformative 2025. Our mission remains unwavering: to accelerate corporate decarbonization by providing practical, actionable support to businesses at every stage of their sustainability journey.
A New Era of Corporate Climate Action
The landscape of corporate sustainability is evolving rapidly. Gone are the days when environmental initiatives were seen as mere compliance requirements or PR opportunities. Today's business leaders understand that decarbonization is both a moral imperative and a strategic necessity. It's about reimagining what's possible in business, innovation, and leadership—proving that what's right for the planet can also be what's best for people and profits.
Every day, I meet leaders grappling with the enormity of the climate challenge—some boldly forging ahead, others unsure where to begin. What inspires me most is their shared desire to make a difference, even when the path forward isn't clear. That's where the Net Zero Institute comes in: to help turn ambition into action and demonstrate that meaningful progress is possible, one step at a time.
We are excited to be rolling out a number of new initiatives in 2025 to meet businesses exactly where they are and provide the support they need on their decarbonization journey:
- First, we'll be rolling out our proprietary Maturity Model framework in weekly blog posts by members of our community to help plan their net zero journey. For each element, we have developed resources aimed at helping companies at each step on their journey, including on-demand workshops and insight briefs that delve deeper into each element of each step of the maturity model.
- For our small and medium-sized business community, we'll release a step-by-step SMB Guide to Corporate Decarbonization. This practical resource will break down our maturity model framework into manageable steps and dive deeper into the elements of the first couple steps, making the net zero journey more approachable for organizations of any size. We recognize that SMBs hold a unique edge in this journey—while resources may be limited compared to large organizations, SMBs can act quickly, innovate readily, and measure results faster. These strengths often translate into early-mover advantages and stronger customer relationships.
- A highlight of our 2025 calendar will be our Sustainability 2.0 Summit, an unconference that will bring together corporate sustainability leaders, experts, and innovators to share best practices, learn from one another, and forge the partnerships needed to accelerate decarbonization across industries.
