Why I chose to focus on corporate climate action
In the summer of 2023, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to visit Lahaina on Maui. Seeing the climate-driven firestorm devastate this once-thriving community just weeks after being there was truly heart-breaking and reinforced my commitment to the critical need for climate action.
We’ve all seen the escalating frequency and intensity of billion dollar climate events like droughts, heatwaves, floods, fires, and severe storms – all posing a significant risk to the safety of our communities, our people, and businesses.
The increasing impact of climate change, from supply chain disruptions to the displacement of workers and customers, is a growing concern for companies. To navigate these challenges, businesses must prioritize the integration of climate strategies into their overall strategy. The results of doing so will prove to be increasingly advantageous as expectations for company engagement rise among employees, customers, and investors.
Massachusetts has a robust ecosystem for climate tech/innovation, policy, and finance. But the business community – especially companies under $1-2 billion in revenue – lacks a neutral platform for learning, connecting and support. The Net Zero Institute aims to fill this gap, offering a space for business leaders to exchange insights and support each other on their journey toward a net-zero economy.
The move to decarbonization is inevitable and underway. Whether businesses choose to be at the forefront of climate action, or ride the wave, it is increasingly evident that adaptation is fundamental for long-term success. We find encouragement in the growing number of businesses that are already adapting and making progress towards a more sustainable future. Delaying action only compresses the workload into a shorter time frame, making it more difficult for those who wait.
We invite you to join us on this journey towards a more sustainable future that is good for people, planet and profitability.
